It’s too much work to create a sweet photograph with all the gear spread out nice and neat … If your curious, there was barely enough room for 2 shirts and 2 pants amongst the camera equipment: Air, Land, Sea.
SAINT BRANDON’S ATOLL | INDIAN OCEAN 16° 35’0.0”S 59° 40’0.0”E – North East of Mauritius
Here we go, cue the automatic “out-of-office” email reply! ….My bags are packed, Global Rescue and SAT phone in tow and I am heading out the door in less than 24 hours. It is going to take 4 days, 4 plane rides, 2 hotels and a 28hr, 268-nautical-mile ocean crossing later to get there. My final destination is a very remote place called Île Raphael on St.Brandon’s Atoll, it’s about 10,393.44 miles away from home.
St. Brandon (Saint Brandon), also known as Cargados Carajos Shoals, is a collective of over 50 islands, coral ridges and vast sand flats on an extended reef located in the middle of absolutely nowhere Indian Ocean. I will be on assignment for Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures with the Fly Castaway boys targeting anything that swims on the flats, mainly giant bonefish and giant trevally. It has been said this place is literally the next frontier in the world of saltwater flats fishing. It is very remote, way off-the-grid and is one of the few remaining protected pristine places left on the planet, not too mention, its extremely difficult to get there.
I am beyond excited and I feel very lucky to be on this trip. This is for sure a once in a life-time opportunity for me, I am looking forward to the adventure and I can’t wait to make some photographs.
I love fishing! I was raised an an angler, with a worm, a spinner and a fly and each has brought me some of the most memorable and valuable moments in my life. I’ve never been able to limit myself to fun. In 2014 I was in rural Argentina with a few great fishing friends, we had an amazing day fishing, with a Tenkara rod. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of anglers have so much camaraderie in an afternoon of fishings since the last time I was there the year before “playing baseball”. Played with 1 fly rod and 1 fly, taking turns with minimal casts, minimal steps, minimal time on the clock and if you swing and miss once, your out and then on to the next guy. There is much much more to fishing, than actually catching fish. This reminds me about the time we randomly found a lure while working on a slackline shoot in the backcountry, with no rod or reel or line around, we unraveled a inner sleeping bag cord, created a rig and caught a little fish. But this day, the day of the Tenkara, was amazing and it couldn’t have gone better.
YC – “Martin, have you ever used a tenkara rod?” MA – “No, never “ YC – “Well, its just like this (quick demonstration) want to try it?” MA – “ahhh, ok.. sure!”
2.83 seconds later
MA – “HOLY SH@*, first cast!!” GROUP – “laughing and cheering”
NATURES BAMBOO ROD Location: Can’t Pronounce It Creek, Argentina
No rod, no line, no problem! Martin Gallo Argerich used natures natural bamboo and no fly line to catch this fish. Why? well, because the rest of the crew headed up river with all the gear, ha. But it didn’t matter.
The new 2016 Hatch Angler’s Annual is hot off the press and is looking better than ever. A huge thanks to all those that help make these images possible: friends, family, fellow photogs, guides, anglers, staff, transfer agents, translators, editors, pilots and taxi cab drivers. It really does take a great team to create great imagery and great content.

SAGE FLYFISH | MOD ROD CAMPAIN Henry’s Fork River, Idaho
Last year the crew set out to create a few new ad campaigns for SAGE Flyfishing with both still images and motion for The fruits of our labor has started to trickle out from the SAGE Flyfish Camp this spring. First up is the the MOD Rod. The project went live last month with a video and photo ad campaign. Stay tuned, more to come!
I really enjoyed this project. The Henry’s Fork river is a place I hold near and dear to my heart. The water, the fish, the people, the bugs, the mountains, it has been a place that has helped me get to where I am today. Getting to know more about Jerry, hearing his stories and seeing a personal glimpse into a man we’ve all admired and grown up with was a special experience. It’s not everyday I get to work with the legends of my youth. Hat’s off to the production crew who made this happen: Drew Stoecklein, Bobby Foster, Catie Webster and of course master Jerry Siem and all the great folks at Sage Flyfish who trusted us with this special project.
