PATAGONIA | FISH WORKBOOK, FALL 2017

CATALOG + WEBSITE + DIGITAL
Argentina & Alaska

The new Patagonia Fish workbook for the Fall 2017 line-up is hot off the press and in the hands of dealers and reps. I was blown away to see my good friend Augustine Fox on the cover. I think it captures nicely the very essence of Agustin (Oggy) Fox, Argentina, and the Patagonia brand. it was a memorable day! Another surprise was seeing this image of Yvon make it to print, ironically this was a day we all spent with our good pal Oggy.

A big thank you to all those folks who allow me to follow them around with my camera and document small significant moments of your life.

TENKARA + BROWN TROUT = FUN

TENKARA + BROWN TROUT = FUN
Las Pampas, Argentina

I love fishing! I was raised an an angler, with a worm, a spinner and a fly and each has brought me some of the most memorable and valuable moments in my life. I’ve never been able to limit myself to fun. In 2014 I was in rural Argentina with a few great fishing friends, we had an amazing day fishing, with a Tenkara rod. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of anglers have so much camaraderie in an afternoon of fishings since the last time I was there the year before “playing baseball”. Played with 1 fly rod and 1 fly, taking turns with minimal casts, minimal steps, minimal time on the clock and if you swing and miss once, your out and then on to the next guy. There is much much more to fishing, than actually catching fish. This reminds me about the time we randomly found a lure while working on a slackline shoot in the backcountry, with no rod or reel or line around, we unraveled a inner sleeping bag cord, created a rig and caught a little fish. But this day, the day of the Tenkara, was amazing and it couldn’t have gone better.

YC – “Martin, have you ever used a tenkara rod?”
MA – “No, never “
YC – “Well, its just like this (quick demonstration) want to try it?”
MA – “ahhh, ok.. sure!”

2.83 seconds later

MA – “HOLY SH@*, first cast!!”
GROUP – “laughing and cheering”

PATAGONIA | FILM WORK

Last summer I had the opportunity to do some film and photo work for Patagonia. Nothing fancy,  capture b-roll and shoot still images. You never know what will get used, so it’s always a pleasant surprise to see the final production.  It’s great to live those moments again. It was a great chance to work with so many great people, some long time friends, and somehow ones.

Patagonia Books Footage | Yvon Chouinard and Maru Mazzo

I was able to help capture footage for Yvon Chouinard and Maru Mazzo for their upcoming new book, Simple Fly Fishing Techniques for Tenkara and Rod & Reel for A tidbit of the footage used. It was great to spend the day with Yvon and Maru. I enjoy every opportunity I get to spend time YC. It’s inspiring to me talk to a person who does what he says and lives what he leads: A dirtbag in every sense of the word.

Patagonia Women’s Waders | Millie Paini

New women’s Patagonia waders are now available. I’m very happy to able to work with Millie Paini throughout the year. It’s really cool to see a company support woman’s anglers. The new folks might not remember but a long time ago, Millie was the poster woman for Patagonia women’s waders. A decade later, she still here, still fishing hard and still making products better for women. The “drop-down” has been in talks for many years mainly due to techniques used when fishing with men out of drift boats and flats boats, etc.  I was excited to be able to work with film-maker Travis Lowe for Millie’s segment on the Henry’s Fork.  The new 2014 Women’s waders line up is made by angling women for angling women.
