EXPERIENCE GUIDE 2020
Kamchatka, Russia

We couldn’t be more pleased to see a few images from Kamchatka grace the pages of Fortune magazine. This was a great trip with great folks — Tom Melvin and James Carroll.

Kamchatka is still a completely wild place with incredible fishing. If you have ever dreamed of fishing remote, untouched rivers for large, aggressive, surface-feeding native rainbow trout, then this trip should be at the very top of your list.

This issue is has a lot of interesting articles and great adventure travel destinations, it’s not one to be missed.

Be sure to head down to your local newsstand and grab yourself a copy or better yet, order a subscription, you won’t be disappointed.

GRAY’S SPORTING JOURNAL: PHOTO ESSAY // BAHAMAS OPTIONS

PHOTO ESSAY | ANDROS ISLAND
24° 25′ 59.99″ N -77° 56′ 59.99″ W – North Andros

I traveled around North Andros in the Bahamas with Ian Davis with the purpose of wade fishing for bonefish. One of the many great things about fly fishing on Andros Island is the extensive wading options. In certain areas, utilizing the tides, you can fish wade for bonefish all day with a just a spool of tippet, and a handful of flies. It’s also always a good idea to have a ‘cuda rod handy. The barracuda are also hunting bonefish. When planning what to bring, it also doesn’t hurt to toss in a few local Kalik beers for the celebratory ride home after a fun day of flats fishing. Big thanks to guides Solomon Murphy and Phillip Rolle for working hard to help us get into fish and the images.

This issue is packed with great articles and some impressive photo essays, it’s not one to be missed.

YELLOW DOG FLYFISHING ADVENTURES ON-THE-WATER PHOTO WORKSHOP
El Pescador Lodge // Ambergris Caye, Belize

Bryan Gregson Photography, Jim Klug and Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures are pleased to announce the continuation and expansion of their popular fly fishing photography schools and workshops. These “On-the-Water Workshops” are designed for photographers of all skill levels and are a great chance for experienced shooters and aspiring photographers alike to join Yellow Dog instructors for a hands-on, adventure-filled outdoor and fishing photography workshop in the field. In November of 2019, our team of adventure angling photographers will once again lead an in-depth and immersive workshop on Ambergris Caye, Belize – one of our favorite destinations for photography. As with our previous schools, this year’s workshop will include daily classes, personalized instruction, field trips, guided fishing, all lodging, and meals.

Our On-the-Water Photography Workshops were created to offer a hands-on learning experience built around real-time fishing, travel and outdoor scenarios. These workshops are taught by working professionals who specialize in adventure angling and off-the-grid travel. Whether a participant is an advanced shooter or someone who is new to photography, this is a curriculum that provides the opportunity for shooters to “up their game” by delivering the tips and tools necessary to create great images. Each participant has the help of an instructor with almost every shot, creating a solid educational experience for all levels.

HATCH CATALOG 2018 | COVER & ESSAY

HATCH OUTDOORS | 2018 ANGLERS ANNUAL CATALOG
Cover + Article Photo Essay + Imagery

It’s always a big surprise when you land a cover. I couldn’t be more happy to see this photo of Doug McKnight on the cover of the Hatch Outdoors Angler’s Annual catalog. The photo was created on a great trip in the Bahamas. While surprised by the cover, I am deeply humbled by words that accompany my photo essay written by my friend, John Torok — co-owner of Hatch. I am honored. It’s been a wonderful relationship with the Hatch crew over the years, and I certainly wouldn’t be doing what I am doing without their support. Thank you!

GRAY’S SPORTING JOURNAL: LEAD PHOTO // QUALITY IN PARADISE

ZEN AND THE ART OF BLUE TRAVALLIES
Article by: Miles Nolte

It’s great to see this image of a blue trevally as the lead off image for Miles Nolte’s article “Quality in Paradise”. The blue trevally is quickly becoming a favorite of mine to both fish for and to photograph. Robust and feisty, full of colors and patterns, they never disappoint the angler or the camera.

GRAY’S SPORTING JOURNAL: PHOTO ESSAY // RUSSIAN SPRING

PHOTO ESSAY | KAMCHATKA PENINSULA
57° N 160° E – West of Russia Mainland

The Senanda River is mousing heaven if I’ve ever seen one. It’s not the fishing that draws me back here, it’s the overall experience. The landscape, the camp fires, the people, the food, the wildlife and then, of course, there is the fish. It was incredible to see a forest that is still relatively untouched and truly wild. Big thanks to Tom, Alejandro and James for letting me tag along with my camera daily.

GRAY’S SPORTING JOURNAL: PHOTO ESSAY // UNTOUCHED

PHOTO ESSAY | SAINT BRANDONS ATOLL
16.5833° S, 59.6167° E – East of Mauritius

I’m thrilled to see the voyage to St. Brandon’s Atoll in Mauritius made it to print. Each time I think about this incredible adventure with the crew at Flycastaway I still can’t believe it. What an incredible area, I had no idea places like this actually existed in reality. A journey I will always remember and a place I will always want to return to.

This essay is from my trip last year while on assignment for Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures with the amazing crew at Fly Castaway. It has been said the Cargados Carajos Shoals is very remote, way off-the-grid and is extremely difficult to get there. I couldn’t agree more.

Big thanks to William for letting me tag along with him on the flats with my camera and to my bunkmate Murray for putting up with all my gear, I’m glad we both had the same taste in room temperate!
